As can be seen in the above map, coal and nuclear power make up the majority of energy production for the United States, with coal leading the way at 52%, followed by nuclear power at 20%. The news, however, is not all bad, since the United States is also the second largest producer of hydroelectric power in the world. The chief issue is that we, as a country, consume a phenomenal amount of energy. To put it in perspective, the United States burned approximately 1 Billion tons of coal in 2000 for electricity production.
